Broody hen

A second hen is sitting on a nest. This time it’s a Rhode Island Red, and sensibly she is safely inside the coop. However we discovered today that she isn’t sitting on any eggs. She just moves from box to box. We might collect a few eggs, mark them, and then leave them under her to see if something clicks and she stays on them.

Cherisse has spent a lot of time on the bees this week, looking at the hives and reading our various beekeeping books. There are signs the hive that swarmed is trying to make a new queen. Saturday is supposed to be rainy, so we will check them again on Sunday. If there is no sign of a queen, we will have to decide on our next step.

The flower garden does need some attention, but happily for the most part if flourishes on its own. The peonies are especially beautiful this year.
